   most guinea pigs die at 5-6. and some live to 7-8 and 9 is really rare. but some guinea pigs die early usually cause they get sick. but some of them die early for no reason mine died at 2 years and we dont know why. yes it is farely common for guinea pigs to die before they are old. a common illness is upper respiratory infection, mites and pneumonia

I can tell you from watching the question come in on this site that a huge amount of guinea pigs die very young simply because they were very ill and people do not realize it. Guinea pigs are prey animals and will hide the fact they are ill until it is in the acute stage and sadly at that point it is usually to late to treat them. Some one who has been around guinea pigs for some time will no they are ill but for the person who has their first few guinea pigs the animals simply die because they never get proper medical care. With proper medical care the average guinea pig will live 6 to 7 years and many much longer.

   I had 8 guinea pigs. Only 1 died early (at 2-3years old). I purchased her from the pet store & a week later she got a cold, turned into a really bad infection & she used to have seizures about 6 times a day so we had her put to sleep. The vet said that she was probably breed way to close or inbreed.

   Here’s some ways to prevent death & make sure your guinea pig is happy & healthy.
   Always have plenty of healthy pet food & snacks like carrots and apples.
   Use spring water instead of tap.
   Clean the cage at least once a week. And when you clean the cage also clean out the water bottle & food bowl. I just use regular soap & baby wipes for the bottom of the cage.
   On nice days put them outside for a little bit. Make sure they get plenty of sunlight.
   Check their nails and trim them when they need to be.
   Check their teeth. Take them to the vet if they get sick.
   Bathe them once every 3 months. Make sure the water is warm, but not hot. If you want you can use a little tiny tiny bit of dog shampoo. Or you can just let them sit in the water for a couple minutes. Be careful not to let any water go into their ears, mouth or nose. Use a sink instead of the bathtub.

   Sorry about your piggy. I had a guinea pig die a week after I got it from a pet shop. I noticed about 2 days after we got her that she was sneezing a lot and had a lot of water coming out of her nose. So I took her to the vet and the vet gave us medicine for an infection but she started having seizures the next day. I held her all day long and was on the phone with the vet to set up another emergency appointment to come in again & she died on the way to the vets
