how do you deal with an undiagnosed mental illness in family?

Question by : how do you deal with an undiagnosed mental illness in family?
What can someone do to deal with a 62 year old family member whom is obviously suffering from an mental illness, but refuses to get help, or acknowledge it? He self medicates with alcohol and prescription drugs. He alienates/can’t get along with others, his only friend is the TV, has drastic mood swings and disorganized/illogical thinking. Is there a professional out there that can give me some tips?
Thank you for your really great answers. Unfortunately the doctor he does see is a pill pusher. How do you think he gets those prescription meds. He won’t go to another dr. because he likes getting the drugs and the brush off!!

He really needs to see a doctor. This could be a mental illness, but it could also be a physical problem. We thought that my grandmother was going senile, but then when her doctors looked at all her prescriptions it turned out she was taking medications that she shouldn’t be taking together. If your family member is self medicating this could be the case. Don’t approach it with him as a mental illness, just try to get him to go in for a routine physical and maybe the doctors can take it from there. Good luck.

There is no difference. Mental illness is the term which most people use to describe a mental disorder.

If you ask a professional if there is any difference they will say that there is no difference at all.

Answer by chaddad67
Well just from the hip, mental retardation would include down syndrome, for example a 20 year old with the mind capacity of a 5 year old. Mental illness could be depression, an addiction, sociopath, psychopath. Drugs can help illness, not retardation

Is having a lack of empathy for others a sign of mental illness?

-

Question by stewieisall: Is having a lack of empathy for others a sign of mental illness?
Recently, a person announced his wife had cancer. To many, this would cause them to cry or feel very sorry for this person and his wife. I however, do not feel anything. I know I should feel for the person but I don’t. I am quite concerned with this because my mother had mental illness and I am not sure if she may have passed her illness to me through genetics. So would this lack of empathy for this person and his wife be a sign of mental illness?

Best answer:

Answer by William
I dont think theres anything necessarily wrong with that. I could see if you were yelling something like “yeah you deserve it” but the fact your concerned about that means you do care. Sometimes its harder to feel empathy for a person you dont know. This is just my personal opinion so if you feel the need to check your symptoms or anything then try doing research on things like mental illness and get advice from professionals. Good luck!
